LinkedIn & Alumni For My Third Week

Our third week began with seeing our headshots taken from the previous week by our COMMS Professor. Since the pictures were accessible, I downloaded the one I preferred and began to create my LinkedIn. I have no previous experience with LinkIn, so I had many questions about its uses. However, my questions were answered later on in the week with the help of Brittany. Afterwards, we were told that a mistake happened with our guest speakers meaning we had a whole lot of free time. Many of us took to working on separate things, or talking with each other. I did both, by talking with others and getting to understand how to properly set up my LinkedIn.

Tuesday’s highlight was the Alumni panel, and this wasn’t just because one of them went to my high school. All of these students spoke incredibly about their current careers, and how the program helped them figure out how to succeed. They all expressed two main points, network with everyone; students, professors, or event the speakers. I took the chance after their segment to get their LinkedIn, and Instagrams for future conversations. The second point was about truly enjoying the moment and getting to soak in every single second that the program has. I can understand this point now since we are so close to the end and there is a few more days until there are no longer any moments to soak in. Along with these points, all the alumni expressed their train wrecked emotions of not getting into their dream schools. I cannot see myself in them just yet, but I can understand their words. One of the alumni expressed how the best school or name will never compare to building yourself up. His message was about self-love and getting to understand that those universities aren’t your only chance of succeeding and that maybe they weren’t for you. I really liked this message because I will have to undergo this in a year.

Our last day felt like a last day. Our lunch was at the EVK which wasn’t the best of the food we have had in the program. Afterwards in our Journalism class we got to see the first edition of our AYA News cast. The editing was amazing and so were the anchors with our first stories we created as a class. This inspired the new anchors who would be in the newscast room for the rest of the class period. During this time, I was searching up all the speakers and alumni on LinkedIn from my own account to create connections. I want to successfully network, since the past alumni all believed that that was one of the best opportunities the program had to offer for their future.

This week was the shortest, and quickest. We got our cameras, and learned of our final assignments. The cameras were all different so, none of the specifics were the same for anyone. The end of this amazing program is near, and I cannot wait to look back on it as a starting step for my future goals.
