This week was awesome sauce. The highlight of this week was going into the popular Wallis Annenberg Building (ANN) and doing some work and projects in it. The first time we went into the building was to record for a podcast that connects to our Vox Pop. Where the recording was small and didn’t have the most professional set up, but that didn’t matter. I learned from experience that you can record anything in any room if you had the basic equipment needed. Although, being in that setting was really different from what I’m used to. I always recorded in my room or at my school’s music room, which was echoey and had basic recording equipment like microphones and PA’s. Being in a different space was a really great experience and brought a sense of change to me. The audio engineer, Sebastian, was really cool and great to work with because he knew what to do. I didn’t need to do much besides read my lines, which was liberating because I’m used to doing all the recording and mixing. Sebastian would also help guide us and give us needed feedback to make sure we got a great take, which I found really helpful. One of his advice was to speak with more passion and Kai, another AYA student, would say the same. Afterwards, I went into the digital media room and reflected on the experience. How everything sounded, how I did, what I may need to improve to do better. I felt one of the things I most reflected on how I spoke and towards the camera. I realized after the take, I was looking away from the camera and looking at my computer, which feels unprofessional. At least I think I looked away. Either way, we’ll find out soon.
The second time we went to the ANN building was to film a newscast for JOUR 101. I was most excited for this day because I would have been able to see the more technical stuff and Professor Alan said I would have been able to work as a sound technician, which is something I’m really passionate about and want to do when I grow older. I was also really excited to be a part of a news team, where we all contributed to make something great. When we entered the room, we were introduced to Tom and someone else who I unfortunately forgot his name. They guided the people who were doing important roles on what to do. For a sound technician, I had to make sure everyone had their microphone on correctly and turned on. One of the guys guided me and told me a piece of important advice for this. “Don’t put it on for them, even if they ask”. I believe he said this because it’s better for them to do it themselves and because they were capable of it. After ensuring they had their microphones on correctly, we were ready to record!!! The anchors and the teleprompter were ready, all I had to do was count down for recording to make sure everyone was on timing. I would count everyone with a role every time they needed until the anchors read through all the stories. Being a part of this role was really awesome because not only did I get to see a newscast and be a part of it, but I also got to be a sound technician and get some needed experience. Overall, week 2 was really cool and had some highlighting experience and I hope to be a part of it more. I’m so sad that we’re coming to an end though.
