USC Chronicles Week 1

I’ve always been an anxious girl, and being in a new environment with new people I have never met before only added to my unease. Thankfully no one here is a bully! I still struggled with pushing myself out of my comfort zone and didn’t end up talking as much as I wanted to, nonetheless I have a bit of confidence that I’ll be able to be more outgoing in the following weeks.

While listening to Megan Telles on the first day, it told me that I could be as confident as her as long as I trusted the process. Her talk gave me plenty of insight on the work and process to becoming a news anchor, while simultaneously easing my stress about the college admissions process.

I was already familiar with the campus since I go to school right next door and have taken a tour before. But this was my first time going inside of the amazing libraries and exploring the campus in depth. Plus I got to get food at the dining halls!

Going into this program, I was a bit too naive about the work that happens behind the scenes of advertisements and marketing. Learning about the Zine’s place in history showed how advertising has changed yet remained the same in the sense that relaying information has always been reliant on all the designs that get incorporated in them. In the article On Emma González’s Jacket and Other Media: The Participatory Politics of the NeverAgain Movement, I realized just how much the media can influence opinions and amplify messages. They utilized social media, even though social media may have been seen as superficial, to spread the word about in person activities such as rallies and protests.

While I feel a bit unsatisfied with my socialization, I have faith that I’ll be able to come out of my shell. I’m looking forward to being able to create a newscast and be behind the camera again!
