Second week at AYA

This week has been amazing, except for the scavenger hunt. I understand it was meant to help us connect with new people, but I felt like it was a bit forced. Luckily, I knew one person in my group, which made it a bit easier. Plus, I’m not a fan of taking selfies, so that aspect of the scavenger hunt wasn’t too enjoyable for me.

Taj Fraizer was my favorite speaker because his approach made it feel more like we were engaging in a conversation rather than being lectured. It was the first time I had the opportunity to speak while a guest speaker was present, and it boosted my confidence in speaking up during other class discussions. As someone deeply passionate about the representation of people of color, I found it especially meaningful to contribute to discussions on that topic.

The podcast assignment was really challenging for me. I had to record it using my phone, and I’ve always been self-conscious about how my voice sounds on recordings. However, I did manage to find one aspect of the assignment that I loved – the song I included in the podcast. “Beauty Supply” by Noname has become an important song for me because it reflects my personal struggles with confidence when it comes to wearing my hair in its natural state. Recently, I’ve been experimenting with different hair styles, and it has definitely helped boost my confidence. Looking ahead, I’m actually planning to start the journey of locking my hair next year, and I’m really looking forward to that new chapter.

I’ve been dedicating my time to volunteering at the science center on Fridays and Saturdays. This past week went a lot smoother for me compared to the previous one. Even though I’m still in training, I’ve become more at ease when interacting with the guests. I was really excited about the prospect of working in the discovery room, but unfortunately, my department isn’t allowed access to it for the time being. I was pretty disappointed about that. On the plus side, I do get a 20% discount in the Explore store, and I’ve definitely taken advantage of that perk. I picked up the sweater that I practically live in, and I also got a journal for my mom.

I recently discovered that I used to be obsessed with one of Joy’s videos, and now I’m kind of upset that I didn’t recognize her sooner. The video I’m talking about is her singing “Satisfied” by herself, and the video is literally me when I sing the song. If I had known it was her, I would have been fangirling even more than I already was. The speakers we’ve had this week have been the best so far.

One of my favorite videos ever!

This week was pretty good overall; I would rate it an 8 out of 10. There were a couple of things that brought the score down for me, like the scavenger hunt which I didn’t enjoy, and the difficulty I had getting up in the mornings. I’m not quite ready for the program to end; I actually wish it was a bit longer because I’m enjoying it so much.
