2nd Week: AI & George Tirebiter

This second week felt shorter than the last, and maybe it’s because I have grown accustomed to the schedule between classes to speakers. I enjoyed this week’s guest speakers a lot as they were all different from each other but still were connected whether it was through journalism or civic engagement.

Taj Frazier took time from his presentation to get to know us, which was sweet of him. He even showed us his recent book, which had unique art within it. The second speaker was my favorite by far, as he introduced us to the Watergate scandal. Mark Schoofs taught us about the art of interviewing and getting someone to never say no to you. His form of presentation was entertaining because it grabbed my attention. The next speaker was also one of my favorites, as she was entertaining. Joy Ofodu is a voice actor among many things, and she presented on the dangers of AI to the media. She was made an NFT without her consent, and I found this personal experience unique as I could have never known that could happen to someone whose career is to be online.

This week I edited my first podcast for the assignment! I created it along with my peers, so I wasn’t so annoyed with hearing my voice over and over until the editing was done. The only thing that troubled me was finding the right music option that would add to the project. Another first this week would be creating a VO script with my other peers as well. We got assigned the entertainment section which was based on movies coming out around the fourth of July. We struggled at first with finding blockbusters that were age-appropriate, but we ended up finishing it before class ended.

After everyone wrote their own story, they were all combined to become our first script for our AYA new station. We were allowed into studio A, which was where we filmed. The center disc could spin around to show different backgrounds which could be interesting for future news recordings.

This week’s spotlight will be the “Community Building Session.” This was based on finding different buildings or statues within the USC campus with a randomly created group. The group you were assigned to all had to take a picture in front of the building/statue, so you couldn’t divide and conquer. This encouraged other groups to run to win this competition, which was fun to see. It was really hot which wasn’t a fun factor, however getting to explore the campus was worth the sweat. I got to see the old architecture intersect with the new modern buildings. Although it was fast-paced trying to find each object, I still found time to truly admire small details within the buildings. Also, expecting to see a human head or such for one of the statues and finding a dog was really funny. His name was George Tirebiter, but I only payed attention to his first name so I guess expecting a human was on me for not reading his last name. I got to see the human statues as well but they weren’t as important to be included in the search.
