My final week at aya was filled with so many things. Our last couple of sessions with professor Rogelio were great, we talked about murals, chicano culture, and so much more. These were some things which I am familiar with growing up in South
Central and going to school in Boyle heights. Which was why I really enjoyed this last week’s topics as I was very engaged. We discussed ideas such as “when does culture appreciation turn into culture appropriation”. I think this last week’s class was super interesting.
We also worked on our project for communications which for me was a podcast. We recorded our podcast and it went great. Compared to the first podcast I did at the beginning of the program, I definitely think I got more comfortable and was able to share more of my ideas. I was able to talk a little bit about my parents’ experience living in America after migrating from Mexico.
All while doing this we also worked on our project for our journalism class with professor Turner. My project was an article on misinformation in the media. I talked to Richard Wike and Nada El Sawy and they were both great! Richard had a lot of the statistics for misinformation while Nada has great stories about misinformation. Then finally I was able to wrap up both my projects.
Something that stood out to me was today’s guest speaker Lora King, her story about her father was so upsetting. This is definitely one of the guest speakers which will stick with me after this program. Lora is such an inspiring and genuine person. I think she was great for being our last guest speaker.
Wrapping up I want to appreciate everyone who was a part of this program. Especially my classmates who weren’t just my friends but they also became people I’ve learned so much through what they shared and questions they asked. Overall this program was great and I’ll miss it!
