As my time at the Annenberg Youth Academy comes to an end I find myself reflecting upon all of our projects, guest speakers, and all the people I have met.
This past week I worked a lot on my final project for communications class. We decided to create a zine that would focus on alternative music and how it contributed to civic engagement. Through this process I was able to gain knowledge on working with others to create complex and detailed products that require cooperation. One of the things I loved about this project was being able to combine all the things I learned in Communication 101 into our zine. Due to this course I was able to understand what civic engagement was and how the media and art can have a huge impact on citizen participation and opinions.
During week 4 of the AYA program we also wrapped up our articles for Professor Turner’s class. Creating our articles was a long process that consisted of brainstorming, elevator pitches, interviews, and a lot of writing. Finishing my interviews and articles helped me feel extremely productive, though I was definitely lacking sleep. It was all worth it because I ended up creating something I was proud of.
Throughout these final few days I also had the privilege of speaking with more of my peers in the program and was given many opportunities to connect with them. I am so happy to have made so many new friends and even though the program is over, I’m glad to have had the time I did with everyone and will forever cherish the memories I’ve made.
