A$AP

My second week at AYA something that really caught my attention was our dive into hip-hop/ music culture within the media. Being someone who loves listening to music and would say has a pretty wide range of music taste.I started with a broad idea on music’s role in the media but this quickly unfolded within the first couple days of this week. Analyzing ‘’this is america” and ‘’h.e.r’’ along with some other songs by tupac was interesting to see how much a song could hold. The song ‘’h.e.r” really caught my attention as this artist unravels his song through a girl he misses but in reality he is referring to hip hop and this girl doesn’t really exist. Instead of directly expressing how he misses the old hip hop he portrays this through a girl he misses which would also be more appealing to the public.

This made me think about what I was listening to. The first thing that came to mind was A$AP Rocky’s song “d.m.b” however I think this only came to mind because of similar titles.

Regardless, even though A$AP Rocky isn’t necessarily a hip hop artist. I got curious and looked into him a bit more. I was familiar with a group he was in before A$AP Mob but only listened to a few songs. After looking into this group a little more I found out that A$AP Mob was an American hip hop collective formed in 2006, in Harlem, New York. Which I found interesting because hip- hop was initially created in New York and this was just a way I connected the two.

So now seeing how A$AP Rocky does have some connection with hip hop I’m sure he incorporates it to his music even today. Which brings me back to Commons’ song “h.e.r” because he misses the old hip hop or even the genre as a whole. Since A$AP is now mainly just a rapper but at one point he used to be a part of a hip hop group it kind of connects to the song “h.e.r”. Being how this is only something I thought of and maybe isn’t true this was one way I connected this week’s class to the real world, because like I mentioned this song by A$AP was the first thing that came to mind. Regardless this weeks take on music was very interesting to me and I hope we can come back to it again even if it is just briefly!
