In the reading, “All I Need is One Mic”, it discusses how hip-hop as not only a genre but as a culture have given young people a way to engage with their communities and combat inequalities. The title of this article comes from the chorus of a song called “One Mic” by a rapper named Nas (Clay 105). His song lyrics talk about how he only needs one mic to spread his voice around the world. This article goes further into how youth of color explore the world around them and explain their experiences through music and dance, such as Hip-Hop. It is a cultural art form that the youth use to develop their political conscience. Hip-hop as a culture has been used by youth of color to spread important messages, political ideas, and simply just expressing their emotions. It is an important art form that is used to bring people together and create a long-lasting community. I was assigned to facilitate this reading and found the class’s answers to be very interesting. Most of their answers feel in line with what the article was saying, like how Hip Hop has helped foster a strong community amongst young people, and how it has been used as civic engagement. There were mentions of Hip-Hop being used to promote a way of life and give inspiration to young people who engage with it.
