This week, I have had an incredible week. I am so grateful to have this opportunity to immerse myself in the communications world. It has transformed my understanding of communications. From the moment you (Prof.Rogelio) walked in I knew you were gonna be a lit teacher. Prof.Rogelio you embarked on my journey that has so far reshaped the way I engage with the world around me.
I remember in the first day of AYA we learned about “what is communications?”, which prof.Rogelio stated that it is a systemic process in which people interact..(Wood,2013) The study of communications is very important since it helps us express ourselves solve problems and connect with many people. It helps us build strong lasting relationships, having good communication helps us be heard and be understood by many people. I really enjoyed the part of learning about communications, especially the media, as it plays an important part. Encoding and Decoding where journalists put in their thoughts ideas where people can understand. For example when people read the news they are decoding their information(intro to comm slides). Furthermore, Juneteenth plays a key role in the media, it provides awareness of the event in American history. The media has helped educate people on certain stuff, it has provided a platform to help the voices of African communities sharing their experience.
These lectures have provided me with lots of information that I have never known about. Some of the stuff our professor lectured, I have never even heard about, this gives me an opportunity to learn about stuff that I have not yet learned about. Day 2 of AYA we started learning about civic engagement which meant “working to make a difference…”(Ehrlich,2000). I remember in class we had a little discussion on what actions civic engagement can take. Some classmates responded by getting involved and making a positive difference in our community. We can volunteer and help others, as well as taking care of our environment. “Even the smallest actions can make a big impact” (unknown), we should be kind, helpful and actively participate in our community so we can make a difference or change.
Day 3 of AYA this week has been my fav day. We got to learn about politics and the media! For example there is the media and the law which the US uses so that we stay safe and sound. So many people back then had to use print and now in modern days we use broadcast on tv. Digital media has contributed to a more modern look in journalism. With the rise of the internet, journalists would publish articles, videos and make podcasts. This allowed them to have a much larger audience and share news in real time. Computers, digital media, and networks have made journalism more accessible to everyone. We got to learn about podcasts which is an audio where you talk about whatever topic you wanna talk about. In the day 3 slides it gave us steps on how to start making podcasts, which helped so much. I got an idea of how to start my own podcasts for the creative project, which I am kind of nervous and excited about. Lastly, on day 4, I learned about civic imagination. It was very cool how the prof showed us images of how it would look in the year 2060. In short, civic imagination is “what a better world would look like imagined” (Henry Jenkins, USC). So far this week I got to learn a ton, the classmates and prof made it even more fun and exciting.
