Media Engagement

In the first week of the 2023 Annenberg Communication’s course, we briefly and deeply went into contextualization and the role of media in today’s society. On June 19th, we went over several functions of encoding and decoding. This is intrinsically connected to how citizens engage with each other in society. In addition, we also talked about the true history of Juneteenth. From the day of June 19th, 1865, many slaves found their freedom and new opportunities. This event was not really talked about in today’s history which is very unfortunate, it was not until the death of George Floyd which occurred on May 25th , 2020 for the slaves history to be talked about and celebrated. Ultimately, it took 156 years for June 19 to become a holiday in the United States Of America. Dia Dos, we reviewed civic engagement and how political participation works together. Civic engagement is when the community/people come together to work towards a specific goal. I really loved when this concept had been brought up due to me being such an advocate of it, especially being a Los Angeles resident. When it comes to politics, we have a major voice, especially having the most populated city in the state of California. As an upcoming generation, society should be more engaging in terms of world problems and activities as we are growing every day. One of my major goals this summer is being more involved in civic engagement so I can advise the majority of my community to get attached. Jour trois, we covered up the role of media when it comes to the problems and culture  of society. Not only are our voices heard physically but also virtually which is possible through the media. In the mid 20th century, the world was in an era where countries were fighting for power, political power and influence. This led to many shifts such as going from manufactured goods to new technology. For example, during the Cold War, the U.S and the U.S.S.R were not only altercating through proxy wars but most importantly through technology including the arms and space race. It was not until the early 2000s where the rise of technology thinking increased dramatically. Modernization was not only used to compete nuclearly with other nations but transformed more into the citizens’ public for its own problems. This eventually led to a developed technological world where media now plays an important role when it comes to the world. In conclusion, society has been developing each decade as well as the digital world, to the point where citizens can now take the negatives and positives of how the world is being handled and use their imagination for a highly utopian society. Using the media is an incredible way to get the youth’s attention as they are the ones connected most to this new digital universe. As an upcoming adult gradually shifting from the younger era, I can now envision many perspectives of how the next generation would most likely be. Through the right knowledge and use of media, we can now advocate for a much bigger change to all audiences.
