In increasing numbers over the years our society has started to move more aspects of our lives onto online spaces to the point where we have adapted ourselves to technology. Important conversations regarding politics and global events have been transferred to these sites in hopes of gaining attention and generating responses, rather than relying on the outdated techniques of the past. This prospect also comes with its downfall as the accessibility of the online sphere has led to an overproduction of low effort and otherwise amateur media that have created new spheres mainly focused on gaining attention rather than thought through social media platforms. On the flip side of this many use social media to their advantage, bringing attention to topics that would remain otherwise ignored using their personal creativity to attract attention with purpose. It is important to take note of these new methods as the have become part of the dominant forces of media in our modern society.
The disconnect between higher level politicians and the average American citizen has been one reason that many have been dissuaded from participating in politics. Feeling as if their voices aren’t worthy enough or if they would even be heard by these strong authoritative forces many have convinced themselves to be content with the lives already shaped for them. The presence of accessible online media can disrupt these pre-constructed narratives worked on my larger outlets that seek to push forth an ideology instead of truthfully reporting to their majority audiences. By introducing this online media people can find sources and articles that speak to them personally, identifying with their own situations, and allowing them to form a motivation based on their own beliefs fueled by hope and familiarity.
One of the primary benefits that came with the creation of the internet was the connection it would provide people either from vast distances or nearby areas. Social media even furthered this, helping to foster communities of like minded people with ease and simplicity replacing the larger process that would usually accompany a pursuit of community. While in some cases communities have been formed on the basis of heinous intentions a much more uplifting notion would be to concentrate on the good collective opinions and passions has brought us to in their accomplishments. People can band together, vying for attention to call for action by higher powers or their peers much more efficiently as it would be harder to ignore the cries of many rather than just one person. As we come together in a collective of motivated individuals creative input takes from the best people have to offer in creating a more successful project.
While online resources to submit media have been largely recognized as respectable tools, cautionary procedures in maintaining this sort of environment are often ignored. A plethora of information exists freely on the internet, however the small amount of monitoring puts readers at risk of being misinformed by false accounts which does happen frequently. The constant campaigns of misinformation are hard to stop when working within the online space so media must remain certain in its place of being factual by including evidence that supports these ideas and movements.
As technology continues to develop much further we as collective citizens must learn to adapt along with it yet set boundaries where things get too muddled. If we hope to keep or passions in hope for coming to fruition we must accurately learn how to navigate the future.
